Breast lift, clinically known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to firm up and lift sagging breasts to make them appear perkier and more youthful. The extent of correction of skin laxity can differ between two patients, but the steps involved in the breast lift procedure will largely remain the same.
Breast lift surgery may be completed in about two hours or less, depending on the degree of correction involved and the surgical technique used. Dr. Paul Fortes is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast lift and other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Dr. Fortes provides these procedures to patients in Houston, Texas, TX, and surrounding communities.
Once the patient is moved to the operating room, the first step will be to administer general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The type of anesthesia will be decided at the time of surgical planning.
In any case, the patient will be fully asleep throughout the plastic surgery procedure. The anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will usually remain present throughout the surgery to monitor the patient’s response to anesthesia.
Placing the Incisions
Following anesthesia, the surgeon will go ahead with the placement of incisions in discreet locations as decided in advance. The location and size of the incisions will be such that subsequent scarring remains minimally visible. As far as possible, the surgeon will place the incisions in the natural breast creases to keep the scars hidden.
Lifting the Breast Tissue
The surgeon will trim away excess breast skin through the incisions. The underlying breast tissue will be gently lifted and re-contoured to elevate the position of the breasts. If the areolas are excessively large, the surgeon may remove some of the tissue from the area to reshape the areolas. The nipples and areolas will also be repositioned to match with the new, raised level of the breasts.
After the breast tissue has been lifted and reshaped, the surgeon will re-drape the overlying breast skin smoothly and tightly. A part of the tissue that was above the nipples may be brought down to the lower breast region. Experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr. Fortes receives patients from Houston, Texas, TX, and nearby areas for breast lift.
Closing the Incisions
The surgeon will place multiple sutures that extend into the deeper breast tissue to ensure that the new, elevated shape and position of the breasts is firmly maintained. If the surgeon uses traditional sutures, these will be removed in about 10 days. If the sutures are absorbable, they will gradually dissolve on their own. Following the surgery, the incision areas will be wrapped in bandages for some time.
After breast lift surgery, the patient will be fitted with a special surgical bra to help retain the new shape and position of the breasts and to expedite healing. The patient will be required to wear this bra at all times for several days.
The surgical bra is designed to provide extra compression to help prevent the incisions from opening up. After some time, the surgeon may let the patient replace this special bra with a sports bra without underwire.
