Breast augmentation currently ranks as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US. While the success rates and sustainability of breast implants have dramatically improved over the years, most women will still require breast implant removal or replacement at least once in their lifetime.
In fact, as many as 40,000 women undergo breast implant removal every year in the US. The procedure is relatively simpler if similar sized breast implants are replaced.
In other cases, breast implant removal may sometimes be performed along with breast lift. Board certified and hardworking plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Fortes provides breast implant removal to patients in Houston, Texas, Beaumont, Port Arthur, TX, and surrounding communities in this area of the country.
Reasons for Removal
Many women seek breast implant removal because they are not satisfied with the current size or shape of their augmented breasts, or their aesthetic preferences have changed over time. Capsular contracture is another major reason for women seeking breast implant removal plastic surgery.
In a few cases, the implant may shift from its original position, develop folds or creases, deflate, rupture or get damaged, or asymmetry may occur between the breasts. In rare cases, an infection or bleeding may take place if the woman has a poor reaction to the implant, or she may develop breast cancer. All these conditions may necessitate breast implant removal.
If the breast implant removal is followed by implant replacement, the procedure is relatively simpler. However, if the implants are not replaced, the surgery is often combined with breast lift because the breasts may tend to sag after implant removal. Breast implant removal procedure is typically performed in about one hour, and may involve general anesthesia or IV sedation.
The surgeon will begin the procedure by carefully removing the capsule or the scar tissue surrounding the implant. Thereafter, the surgeon will remove the implant. In case of saline implants, the surgeon may deflate them prior to removal. As far as possible, the surgeon’s goal will be to use the same incisions for implant removal that were used for original breast augmentation.
In a few cases, capsulectomy may have to be performed, which involves removal of the breast capsule. This is usually done if the implant is not being replaced, the new implant is of a bigger size, the new implant is to be placed in a new position, or the new implant is of a different type or texture.
If the patient does not want implant replacement, her breast pocket where the original implants were placed will seal with time. If she wears a breast support or compression garment, the sealing will occur faster. This will also help to minimize the chances of fluid accumulation in the pocket.
Recovery will vary from one patient to another depending whether the implants are replaced, a breast lift is performed, or any complications that may arise in rare cases. In most cases, recovery will be similar to that of original breast augmentation.
