For Looks and Function

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure that aims to alter the shape, size, or function of the nose.

It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to enhance the appearance of the nose, or for functional reasons, to improve breathing or correct structural defects. The procedure can involve modifying the bone, cartilage, or both and may address various aspects of the nose, such as the bridge, tip, or nostrils.

Types of Rhinoplasty:

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty:

This type of rhinoplasty focuses on enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the nose. It may involve altering the size, shape, or proportion of the nose to achieve a more harmonious facial balance.

Functional Rhinoplasty:

Functional rhinoplasty is aimed at improving the function of the nose, particularly addressing issues related to breathing and structural abnormalities, such as a deviated septum or narrow nasal passages

What are the benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can provide a variety of benefits, both cosmetic and functional.

Cosmetic Benefits

Rhinoplasty can significantly enhance the appearance of the nose, improving facial symmetry and balance. It can increase or decrease the size of the nose, alter the shape or size of the tip, remove a bump from the bridge, or adjust the shape of the nostrils. These changes can boost a person's self-esteem and confidence, eliminating years of self-consciousness caused by dissatisfaction with their nasal appearance.

Functional Benefits

Rhinoplasty can also improve the function of the nose. It can correct structural problems within the nose that make it hard to breathe, such as a deviated septum. This can lead to improved sleep, as better breathing can alleviate issues such as snoring and sleep apnea. Additionally, rhinoplasty can make exercise easier by removing any nasal obstructions that may cause breathing issues

Health Benefits

Rhinoplasty can also provide several health benefits. It can help treat chronic sinusitis or inflammation of the sinuses, reduce sinus issues, and even help with sinus problems caused by a deviated septum. It can also repair a broken nose, returning it to its previous appearance and reducing associated pain.

Psychological Benefits

The psychological benefits of rhinoplasty should not be overlooked. By improving the appearance of the nose, rhinoplasty can boost a person's self-esteem and confidence, potentially leading to improved emotional health

A New Perspective

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

If you are considering rhinoplasty, contact Dr. Fortes for a consultation so he can first evaluate the structure of your nose and face and discuss with you your appearance expectations. Factors such as the structure of your nasal bones, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin, and your age will affect the outcome of your surgery. Computer imaging also will help you and Dr. Fortes determine the results of your surgery based on the size and shape of your nose.

Your Rhinoplasty Procedure

The surgery can be performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia and takes approximately one to two hours to complete. Rhinoplasty typically includes the following steps:

Anesthesia: Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.

The Incision: Rhinoplasty can be performed using different techniques, including closed and open procedures. In an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon creates an external incision along the columella and small incisions within the nostrils to access and modify nasal tissue, cartilage, and bone. This approach allows for more extensive modifications and is often recommended for cases involving significant tissue alteration or functional concerns

Reshaping the Nose Structure: In rhinoplasty, surgeons may reduce an overly large nose by removing bone or cartilage. Additionally, they may need to add cartilage grafts, commonly sourced from the septum, the partition in the middle of the nose. In some cases, cartilage from the ear or a section of rib cartilage may be used for this purpose. The choice of the rhinoplasty method depends on the patient's nasal shape and their expectations for the surgery regarding the form and size of their nose. There is no standard rhinoplasty, and the methods vary widely based on the type of nose deformity and the patient's demands and expectations

Correcting a Deviated Septum: If the septum is deviated, it can be straightened and the projections inside the nose reduced to improve breathing.

Closing the Incision: The incisions are then closed, and the procedure is complete.

Rhinoplasty Results

Although the final results may take some time to fully realize, most patients notice a significant difference in the appearance of their noses around four to six months after the procedure, with most of the initial swelling diminished by the four-month mark. The results of a well-performed rhinoplasty should last a lifetime. Aging may cause slight changes to the nose's appearance, but the overall structure of the new nose should be permanent. It's important to note that the longevity of rhinoplasty results can be influenced by factors such as the surgical techniques used, the skill of the surgeon, genetics, the thickness of the nasal skin, facial trauma, and lifestyle choices

Guided Recovery

Rhinoplasty Recovery and Aftercare

For the first day following surgery, patients should plan on staying in bed with their head elevated. Patients must avoid hitting or rubbing their nose for approximately eight weeks, as well as limit exposure to the sun for two months. Depending upon the procedures performed, a splint may be applied to the nose to help maintain its shape after surgery. Most patients can return to work or school within seven to 10 days following surgery and can resume exercise and other strenuous activities after about two weeks.
