Your Hair Deserves Better

Hair Restoration with PRF at Paul F. Fortes MD Plastic Surgery

Hair thinning is something countless people deal with, both men and women, often earlier than expected. It can start gradually, with a little more hair in the brush or patches that look thinner in the mirror. It’s incredibly common, but that doesn’t make it easy to accept. And with so many so-called “solutions” out there, it can be frustrating to figure out what actually works and what’s just another empty promise.

At Paul F. Fortes MD Plastic Surgery, we offer a different approach: PRF hair restoration. This non-surgical solution uses your own blood, specifically, the healing and growth factors in platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), to naturally stimulate hair growth, strengthen existing hair follicles, and improve overall scalp health. It’s a safe, minimally invasive treatment that delivers real results for people who are ready to take control of their hair loss concerns.

Dr. Fortes brings over 30 years of experience in patient-centered, aesthetic care. At our Houston Med Spa, we help people feel confident and comfortable in their skin, with treatments backed by science, performed in a setting built around trust, comfort, and long-term results.

Let’s Start at the Root

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss can be triggered by a number of things, and it rarely has just one root cause. The most common type, androgenic alopecia, is genetic and affects both men and women. But beyond that, hair thinning can also result from hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, autoimmune conditions, and certain medications.

Even factors like poor scalp health, excessive styling, or underlying health issues like thyroid disorders can make things worse. Over time, these factors affect the function of the hair follicle cells, limiting their ability to grow new hair and support healthier hair growth.

The Science of Growth

What is Hair Restoration with PRF?

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is a concentrated substance derived from your own blood, rich in platelets, white blood cells, stem cells, and healing and growth factors. It’s considered a second-generation version of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), but with several advantages. While both use components from your own blood to support regeneration, PRF contains more platelets and releases growth factors more slowly, offering longer-lasting benefits for tissue repair and hair regrowth.

To perform PRF hair treatment, we draw a small amount of blood and spin it in a centrifuge to isolate the PRF. This concentrated solution is then carefully injected into the scalp, targeting areas of thinning hair and helping to stimulate dormant hair follicles. These follicles are often still alive, just inactive, waiting for the right boost to re-enter the growth phase.

PRF hair restoration encourages the body’s own healing process, boosts collagen production, and improves blood flow to the scalp. It’s a natural and effective solution that improves the strength and thickness of your hair over time, without the need for harsh chemicals or synthetic ingredients.

Hair Restoration with PRF Candidates

PRF hair restoration works best for people who are starting to notice hair thinning, especially in areas like the hairline or crown, where the follicles are still present but less active. If your hair is gradually becoming finer or more sparse, and you're not quite ready to consider surgical options, PRF may be a great fit.

This treatment is most effective when there are still active follicles that can respond to the boost of growth factors. It’s a popular choice for those who want to avoid medications or chemicals and prefer a regenerative, natural solution. If you're in generally good health, not taking blood thinners, and aren’t dealing with a scarring form of hair loss, chances are PRF will be a safe and effective option for you.

The best way to know for sure is to come in for a consultation. We’ll look closely at your scalp, review your medical history, and talk through your goals. If PRF isn’t the right solution, we’ll help you explore other options to support your hair regrowth and overall scalp health.

While PRF is considered safe for most patients, there are some contraindications to be aware of. This treatment may not be recommended for individuals with severe platelet disorders, active cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune scalp conditions, or anyone currently on blood thinners or managing clotting disorders. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients may also be advised to postpone treatment.

Side effects are usually mild but can include temporary swelling, redness, bruising, itching, or scalp tenderness at the injection sites. These symptoms typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours. Rarely, patients may experience a mild headache or scalp tightness. We’ll review all risks, side effects, and considerations during your consultation to ensure this is a safe and appropriate option for you.

Easy Prep, Smarter Results

Hair Restoration with PRF, Consultation and Preparation

The process always begins with a one-on-one consultation. We’ll evaluate your scalp, discuss your hair loss concerns, and build a customized treatment plan based on your goals. We’ll also determine how many sessions you may need. Many patients see results after three treatments, while others may benefit from additional maintenance treatments.

Before your appointment, you’ll want to stay hydrated and avoid anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen for a few days, as they can interfere with the healing process. We also recommend washing your hair the day of your session and arriving with a clean, product-free scalp. All of your pre-treatment and post-treatment care instructions will be clearly outlined during your visit.

What a PRF Session Is Like

The Hair Restoration with PRF Procedure

Your PRF session takes about 45 to 60 minutes. First, we draw a small sample of blood, just like a routine lab test. This blood is spun in a specialized centrifuge to separate out the platelet-rich fibrin. While that’s happening, we’ll apply a local anesthetic or numbing cream to the scalp to ensure minimal discomfort.

Once the PRF is ready, it’s injected into the scalp in targeted areas where hair follicles are under-active. The process is quick and precise, and most patients find it very tolerable. Because the PRF comes from your own blood, there’s virtually no risk of blood clots, allergic reactions, or side effects.

After the session, you can go back to most normal activities right away. There’s no major recovery time, just some mild soreness or swelling in the treated area that typically goes away within a day or two.

Real Growth Takes Real Time

PRF for Hair - Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

The PRF Hair Restoration Timeline:

Week 1: Initial session; mild soreness or swelling may occur

Weeks 4–6: Second session; early signs of reduced shedding

Weeks 8–10: Third session; improved texture and thickness

Months 3–6: Peak improvement window for visible regrowth

6–12 Months: Maintenance treatments recommended

PRF hair restoration isn’t a quick fix; it’s a process. But with patience, it can lead to real, noticeable changes. Most patients begin to see improved hair thickness, better hair texture, and less shedding within two to three months after starting treatment.

We usually recommend a series of three treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months to support continued hair regrowth.

Right after your appointment, you might notice some swelling, tenderness, or redness in the scalp. That usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours. You’ll want to avoid washing your hair for 24 hours and skip workouts, hot showers, or steam for the rest of the day. Avoid alcohol or blood-thinning medications for 24 to 48 hours, and hold off on harsh styling or chemical treatments for a few days. We’ll provide full post-treatment care instructions so you know what to expect.

Your results will build gradually as the healing and growth factors go to work, improving scalp health, stimulating dormant hair follicles, and supporting long-term tissue regeneration.

While individual results can vary, most patients see a 10–20% improvement in hair density after the first three treatments, with further improvement over time as the follicles respond to the healing properties of PRF.

It’s important to know that PRF hair restoration is not a one-time fix. Like many natural treatments, it requires ongoing care and maintenance treatments to preserve results. The earlier you start, especially in the case of androgenic alopecia, the better your response is likely to be.

What You’re Really Paying For

How Much Does Hair Restoration with PRF Cost?

Because PRF hair restoration is customized to each person’s needs, the cost can vary. Some patients only need a few treatments, while others choose to continue with maintenance sessions for long-term results. The size of the treatment area, the number of sessions, and any combination with other med spa services will all factor into your total.

During your consultation, we’ll go over a full breakdown of what’s included. This often covers the blood draw, PRF preparation, local anesthetic, and any post-treatment follow-up. We believe in clear, upfront pricing and will help you understand exactly what to expect so you can plan with confidence.

Pricing typically starts at $700–$900 per session, depending on the size of the treatment area. Most patients benefit from a series of three to four initial treatments, spaced about a month apart, followed by maintenance sessions every six months to a year to preserve results. Your personalized plan and exact pricing will be discussed during your consultation.

Hair Restoration with PRF FAQs

Paul F. Fortes MD Plastic Surgery

Yes, millions of people experience hair loss at some point, often starting as early as their 20s or 30s.

Some surgical options can offer long-term results, but PRF hair restoration is a non-surgical, long-lasting way to support regrowth and slow further thinning.

The procedure involves minimal discomfort, especially with numbing cream or a local anesthetic applied beforehand.

Because PRF is made from your own blood, side effects are rare. Mild swelling or soreness is possible but typically resolves quickly.

There’s very little downtime. Most people return to their regular day immediately, with only minor scalp tenderness for a day or two.

Most patients benefit from a series of three to four sessions spaced about one month apart. Maintenance treatments every six months to a year help preserve long-term results.

Studies and clinical experience suggest that 70–80% of patients with early-stage hair loss respond positively to PRF. Results vary based on age, scalp condition, health, and consistency with treatment.

Men typically experience patterned hair loss at the hairline and crown, while women often notice more diffuse thinning. PRF can support hair regrowth in both cases, though treatment plans may differ slightly depending on the pattern and severity of hair loss.

If you’re taking anticoagulant medications (like warfarin, aspirin, or Plavix), have a clotting disorder, or certain autoimmune diseases, PRF may not be suitable. We’ll review your full medical history during your consultation to ensure safety.

There’s no major lifestyle change required, but avoiding harsh chemicals, tight hairstyles, and excessive heat tools can help support your results. A healthy diet and stress management also play a role in overall scalp and hair health.
